Weaving by the Sea 2017

Soon we will have details of our new courses for Weaving by the Sea 2017 staying for the second year at the excellent Hotel Caesar . We will offer six courses over the seven day period - you will be able to choose 1 or 2 courses each depending on how long you would like to join us. We promise as usual a mixture of techniques, materials, traditional and contemporary designs carefully thought out by our expert tutors. Bjørnø Summer Nature High School, 28th June - 3rd July

I know I'm biased - because I'm teaching - but this place is very special - we'll be working outdoors next to a large overgrown withy bed, the finest basketry wetland I've ever seen and a huge teepee in case we need shelter from the sunshine or showers. Expect to be peeling and cooking bark, harvesting and processing numerous rush/grass/sedge species, learning a whole host of soft material techniques - looping, twining, braiding.....oh and I haven't mentioned the food!

Finding Fibres - exploring Basketmaking & Textile Art with Natural Materials

Exploring our immediate environment can often provide us with a numerous materials and a wide variety of creative possibilities - during this workshop participants will gain the confidence to make work wherever they are with whatever they find available. We will investigate ideas of location and mapping, connection to place and improvisation alongside traditional techniques including string making, twining, looping and braiding and some of Tim's own special techniques such as freecoiling and nailbinding.

Artist in Residence and exhibition, Briddlesford Lodge Farm, Isle of Wight

Rafal III - Sculpture Project,  30th July - 1st August, Mas de Barberans, Spain

In the week before the Fira de les Fibres Vegetals we will work on a sculpture project around the village of Mas de Barberans, this year the project will coincide with the Fibres Campus including numerous workshops and talks. We will be working with local materials including Olive and Cane and will be based in the old square by the olive museum where grain winnowing used to take place.    Exploring Weft Twining, 19th-21st September 2014, Westhope Craft College, Shropshire

Working with soft materials, including various rushes, grasses and handmade cordage, you will explore a variety of weft twining techniques from worldwide basketry traditions. Starting with pairing - familiar to the English rushwork tradition, we will lead on to countered and un-countered alternate pair twining, three strand braidweave, openwork and diagonal lattice twining. Students will work on one or two projects including baskets, mats and covered bottles.
