Basketry Workshops coming up......part 1. Heather Creel in Caithness

I have two exciting, unusual and slightly related basketmaking workshops coming up in August at opposite ends of the country that are currently taking bookings and places are being snapped up quickly!

First up is a workshop weekend at the Castlehill Heritage Centre, Castletown in Caithness at the very north east tip of Scotland. I gave a workshop there in 2007 alongside renowned artist and paper maker Joanne B Kaar exploring a variety of local materials and in combination with hand made paper. During the workshop a beautiful old Heather Creel (below) was brought in for us to see and is now part of the Heritage Centre's collection. This Heather Creel will now form the starting point for our workshop learning how to work with this now unfamiliar basketry material.

Creels were hard working baskets used around the croft or farm for agricultural and fishing work. Similar baskets called Kishies and Buddies were also found in Shetland and made from Oat Straw and Docken.

There will be an introductory Willow basketry course on the Friday the 5th August with myself followed by a two day course working from the Heather Creel on the 6th and 7th August 2011. More information may be found under the Education and Events tab of the Castletown Heritage Society website: www.castletownheritage.co.uk

See you there!
